Dr. David J. Hetzel
M.D., FACOG, FACS
Dr. Hetzel is originally from the Midwest. He obtained his undergraduate education from the University of Wisconsin and is a graduate of the Medical College of Wisconsin. His residency training was at the Mayo Clinic, and he completed a fellowship at Penn State School of Medicine. Dr. Hetzel has a special interest in clinical research for women’s cancers. He is a Primary Investigator for the Gynecology Oncology Group, as well as the American College of Surgeons Oncology Group. Both organizations perform surgical and chemotherapy clinical trials for women’s cancers. Dr. Hetzel’s main inspiration comes form his supportive and talented wife, Terri, and he finds great joy and love through his four daughters. He enjoys mountain biking, travel to foreign countries, photography, and running.
Dr. Tim Vanderkwaak
Dr. Vanderkwaak is a graduate of Wayne State University School of Medicine in Detroit, Michigan. He completed his residency in obstetrics and gynecology from the University of Alabama in Birmingham. He completed a research fellowship in gene therapy and a clinical fellowship in gynecologic oncology. He is an Investigator for the Gynecologic Oncology Group, and he is the division director of gynecologic oncology for the MAHEC Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Dr. Vanderkwaak enjoys time with his wife, Michelle, and four children. He also enjoys hiking, biking, and camping, as well as church activities.
Dr. Blair Harkness
Dr. Harkness joined Hope in July, 2006. He is a graduate of the University of South Florida College of Medicine. He completed his residency in obstetrics and gynecology at Mountain Area Health Education Center and his fellowship training in gynecologic oncology at the University of Minnesota. He is board certified in gynecologic oncology and has a special interest in clinical research for women’s cancers. Dr. Harkness and his wife, Ursula, are proud parents of twin girls.
Dr. Ashley Case
Dr. Case is a native of North Carolina and attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill for both undergraduate studies and medical school. She then completed residency training at the University of Alabama in Birmingham followed by a fellowship in gynecologic oncology at Washington University in St. Louis. She was proud to return to North Carolina in August 2009 at which time she joined Hope. Dr. Case is board certified in Obstetrics and Gynecology and Gynecologic Oncology as well as a member of the Society of Gynecologic Oncology, American Society of Clinical Oncologists, American Association for Cancer Research, and the American Society for Colposcopy and Cervical Pathology. Dr. Case has special interests in clinical research for women's cancers, genetic predisposition to gynecologic cancer, and complex pelvic surgery. She is trained in minimally invasive surgery utilizing laparoscopy and the DaVinci surgical system in the surgical management of gynecologic malignancies. Dr. Case is married with three children and enjoys snow skiing, reading, running and spending time with her wonderful family.
Dr. Rachel Raab
Dr. Raab joined Cancer Care of WNC in June 2015. She is dedicated to providing the most advanced cancer therapies, utilizing state-of-the –art clinical trials, and focused on providing personal and individualized care to each patient. She has a special interest and expertise in breast and gynecologic malignancies and is passionate about bringing her knowledge and skills to Western North Carolina. Dr. Raab sees patients at both Cancer Care of Western NC in Asheville and at Hope Women’s Cancer Center. Dr. Raab received her medical doctorate from East Carolina University in Greenville, North Carolina. She completed an internship in Internal Medicine at the University of Vermont, a residency in Internal Medicine and a fellowship in hematology oncology at Albert Einstein College of Medicine/Montefiore Medical Center in the Bronx, New York. She is board certified in Internal Medicine, Hematology, and Medical Oncology. Outside of work, Dr. Raab loves spending time with her husband and son and enjoys outdoor activities, cooking, reading, and traveling.
